Installing a game off disc is slow on XB1 but, depending on the size of the game, mine takes between 20-40 minutes max. There's now way it should be taking a day!
Downloading is another matter, this entirely depends on your broadband speed. I've got the minimum Virgin fibre 50mb/s, soon to be boosted to 70mb/s though, but even with that downloads on XB1 are pretty speedy at about 5 mins per GB.

I think the installation time slows right down if you turn the console off and let it carry on installing whilst in standby.

I'm not a fan-boy, I've got both the Xbox One and the PS4 and I've got to say that PS4 is deathly slow downloading ANYTHING, and I don't have the same problem with the Xbox.
    • #30
If I'm installing a disc I will install the game first then do the update, because it usually does both at the same time and that's why it takes a while.
    • #31
Can you not start playing the game before the install is completed like you can on PS4?
With disc based games there's usually an initial 10-20 second install but from there you can usually jump in & play the game without having to wait as the data is installed in the background.
With digital stuff you usually require a few GB to download before you can jump in & start playing but some features, modes etc. may be locked as more data needs to be downloaded.

      You can indeed.

Absolutely hate it. I've been console gaming since before the NES, and I can't tell you how frustrating all of this DLC and updating nonsense is. Consoles should be plug and play. PCs are all about constant updating of hardware and software. The charm with consoles was always that things just worked without a fuss. It looks like those days are gone, but I can see a massive hole in the market for a console developer to make a console that just. works.
I can't even play my Xbox at the moment because it's asking me for my email address and password. WTF? I pay £400 and can't even use the bloody thing! Idiotic M$.

This is the reason I almost chucked Destiny out of the window. Every time I picked up the controller for 'a quick game' I found there was a large update waiting to install and I had to sit there twiddling my thumbs NOT playing. Between Destiny updates and general console updates there was no time for a blimmin' game!
I remember MS promising us that the advent of online consoles would not mean constant patches etc, but it seems they might have been fibbing.
    • #34
You can't blame MS for Destiny's updates. You'd get the same on PS4.
Do you not use the auto-update feature of the console?
Also, Destiny only has *one* main update per month, with the occasional 'hotfix', while Xbox One itself only has *one* main update per month.
    • #35
That's 1 too many for a console in my view.
1 for the console and 1 for each game you own still makes it extremely frustrating for a casual gamer that might pick up a controller a few times a month.
    • #36
since i have fibre things have changed dramatically, the XB1 installs and updates super quick and my speed is around 40mbps
    • #37
All these problems just don't happen to me, I get lots of console updates but I suppose that's down to being in the preview program. Occasionally a game will need an update but it doesn't take long, all in all a fairly smooth ride.
A decent net connection is very important this generation, but you can always disconnect your console from the net and play games from disc and never receive updates etc. Single player only lol.
I personally lay the blame at the game makers feet, day one updates the size of the game itself ! No. Broken or buggy games that need many smaller updates over the coming months. I wouldn't mind waiting all day for a game to install if that was it, but more often than not the game needs fixing.
PS I buy all my games digitally so they do take a 4-6 hours to install, but I seem to avoid the day one updates

Yes. It's actually impossible to buy an Xbox One and use it with no access to the internet. It won't work out of the box. Seems rather silly to me.

      So you'd prefer no updates?!
No bug fixes, no new or improved features.
Would you rather Destiny (and other games) and Xbox One itself were still as they were at launch?

Improved features yes but it seems now developers just release games when they fancy and worry about the bugs after. Heaven forbid we go back to the days when games just worked when you got them.

The reason it takes so long is because the disk is nothing more than a licence key to download the game now, very little, if any of the actual game is actually on the disk. When you put that disk in the drive, all you're doing is telling Microsoft you have bought the licence to play it, and it'll begin downloading it from the internet for you. So you're not just installing it, you're actually downloading the whole game too.
I used to like having a physical copy of the game on the 360, but now I know the disk is nothing more than a licence key, I buy digitally. I don't have to swap disks that way and can preload the games before release, so they're ready as soon as the game is released. I don't notice much of an issue anyway though to be honest because I've got fibre optic.
It's clear they're pushing hard for people to get games digitally. I was never a fan, but I must admit, they've pushed me in that direction too. It's also getting increasingly like most people will need fibre optic if they want a speedy connection, what with super HD videos and large game downloads.

I'd prefer a product that was complete at launch, rather than paying for an incomplete product that needs to be patched costing me further time and money.
Why sell a console that doesn't work? Why sell a game on full release that is incomplete and needs patching?
So, yes. I would prefer no updates. I want a complete game that I can play, like I have been doing for the past 30+ years. If I want new content, that should be my choice as a consumer.

I'm not so sure of that. I thought that most of the time you're installing the main game from disc whilst updates are downloading from the internet - or why would it even bother notifying and asking if you want to download the latest update when you first put the disc in? If it was all a download then the latest, updated, version would just download.
Also, if the whole game is downloaded as opposed to being on the disc, how come going offline speeds up disc-based installations?
      http://www.ubergizmo.com/how-to/install-xbox-one-games-faster-xb1/
      Also:
Why does it take so long to install a game?
Game installs depend on how fast a drive can transfer files. The maximum data transfer rate for the Xbox One's disc drive is currently 54 Mbps.

I've not bought a disk copy of anything since I've had an Xbox One, but my brother has, and it was saying it is downloading like 20gb+. That would be the whole game, it's too big a file size and far too long a process to just be a few updates.
Also, game installation doesn't take that long. Think of installation on PC for example. Have you ever known a PC installation take several hours? I haven't. At 54mbps, even big games wouldn't take too long.

So, essentially, you're saying that everything on the internet about Xbox One installations from disc is wrong, even the stuff on the Microsoft website?
Also, updates and DLC, depending on the game, can be pretty huge.
The Xbox One, if disconnected from the internet, installs disc media a lot quicker - along the lines of a 56mbps drive. If connected to the internet at the same time, and downloading updates, it takes a lot longer. This is widely acknowledged even by the top bods at MS.
Again, if the games weren't on the disc, how do they even install when the console is offline?

Why, does it say most of the game is on the disk on those sources? If it does, fair enough, though it seems suspect. I've never known an update be so large, it'd warrant several hours of download time.
Like I said, I've not bought a disk, but I'm sure my brother said it was downloading like over 20gb last time he had one- a 20gb update, really?! And it universally took ages, no matter what game it was.
When I buy digital versions of games and preload, at midnight when the game is released, I can play very quickly. Any updates usually download in just a couple of minutes, even large updates.

You seem to be missing this point: You can install a game fully from a disc without the console even being online. This is fact and is a method of speeding up disc-based installation.
Can I install a game while I'm offline?
Yes, you can install a disc-based game while you're offline. See Using Xbox One offline.
      from http://support.xbox.com/en-GB/xbox-one/games/install-games again.
The Xbox One requires you to install a game before you can start playing it. Even if the game is a optical disk based one, you will have to install it on the Hard drive of the console before launching it, however, the Xbox One has had a very weird problem of slow installation from the first day of its launch.
Gamers have been complaining about it and even Microsoft’s Exec Phil Spencer acknowledged that this was definitely an issue which they are working on to resolve as quickly as possible. No time frame for a fix has been provided by the company and so far gamers are on their own to fix this minor issue on their consoles.

from an article earlier this year on http://www.ubergizmo.com/how-to/install-xbox-one-games-faster-xb1/

Disc based games are produced weeks before launch so launch day updates are becoming more and more of an issue and generally getting bigger and bigger. Your preloaded digital version of the game will have been the most up to date version when downloaded and kept up to date as you go along.
So, yes - depending on the game and what was actually being downloaded, a 20GB update isn't all that uncommon. This is one point that a lot of folk are miffed about.

I didn't miss the point, I just assumed it turned all other online services off but kept the part where it downloads the game connected, thus turning your console to offline would speed up the download because the only part that would then be connected, would be the part that is downloading the game- otherwise, why would it even affect it? You also mentioned that you thought a large part of that time was downloading updates, and they clearly come from online, so it wouldn't even be able to download them if the console was fully offline. If you can still install a game with your internet turned off at the source- i.e, the router, than fair enough, though I can't remember if the xbox even lets you sign in with your internet off? Genuinely can't remember, haven't had internet off for a while now.

You kind of did miss the point.
Offline, not signed into XBL, unplug your cat5 cable and/or switch off your router, even - you're purely installing the game from disc. Downloading the updates would then need to be done completely separately once you've gone back online. At the end of the day - the game is being installed from disc. The disc is not just an unlocking device for the game to then be downloaded.
What slows the process down is when you're installing from disc AT THE SAME TIME as being online, signed into XBL, and downloading updates.

Ok, but you said earlier, large updates were a big part of the problem and this wouldn't remedy that at all. You'd have to sign in online and download the huge update as you say.
Maybe I'm just overly cynical, but it seems very suspect that disk buyers get these humongous 'updates' that are 20gb+ and take ages to download and that what's on the disk itself can be installed fairly quickly.
That suggests to me that most of the game is still being downloaded from the internet and they call it an 'update', yet it's actually most of the game, hence why it takes forever.

      No.
The whole game is on the disc. You can install the whole thing and play it even completely disconnected from the internet. I have installed and played games on mine when i moved house and had no internet at all. While its connected it installs updates while it installs the game. I have yet to see in my vast disc collection any game downloading a 20gb update.

I think the title is pretty self-explanatory. The newest version of Xbox 360 firmware comes with a feature that automatically shuts down your Xbox after a period of inactivity, which you can set yourself. If I'm downloading something big enough that it takes longer than my shut-off time, will the Xbox wait until it's done before powering down? Why cant i download games on my iphone.

The 6 hour turn off won't stop downloads if you have 'background downloads' turned on. This is accessed via the normal 360 settings on the right most 'screen'.

If its downloading the power light will continue to flash after you've powered the console off. Sometimes it might take a minute or two before it kicks into this mode after being powered off - I'm not sure why but my 360 does at least.
